Easy access from Barcelona Gerona, Perpignan, Carcassone, Toulouse.

BEACHES and Water The Mediterranean coastline is easily accessible from Vernet les Bains. The closest is St Mary Plage, just north of Perpignan. However, only an hour away from us is Argeles which combines long sandy beaches and the start of the Costa Brava type rocky outcrops on the southern end, the small hamlet of Rocque. The nearby town, Argeles Sur Mer, is quite traditional French, while Port Argeles is more cosmopolitan. This stretch of coast also includes entertainments such as Aqualand. Further south there are Collioure and Banyuls, which are pretty seaside villages with beaches back-dropped by the Pyrenees entering the Mediterranean. Our accommodation is also within easy reach of the Spanish Costa Brava and there is the option of a coastal drive with tremendous views.
In Vernet Les Bains there is an open-air swimming pool in Summer and an indoor pool open in other months (5 mins walk away, 1 min by car).
There is also a play lake at Vinca and a water park at ERR in the mountains.
MOUNTAINS Walking & History Our apartment faces Mount Canigou which is 9000 ft high and has snow on it well into the year. You can walk up it or even race it in August. The area around also has gentle walks (such as one from our gite to Villefranche de Conflent or the stroll up to the Abbaye St Martin) gentle runs (such as a 10km round trip including Sahorre that one of our renters reported).
There are spa pools for lounging in, and cool mountain streams with rock pools to chill in.
Further north you can track down the Da Vinci story or visit Mont Louis, the highest walled village in France, or is that Europe ?
..or even SKI
Pyrenees 2000 and Les Angles are the two biggest resorts 45 mins- 1hour away. There are many others such as Eyne, Formigueres. It is an area with good snow and variety. Andorra is only an hour and a half away.

There is a large living/dining room with a dining table for six but has coped with 9 admirably ! TV/Music player etc.
One bunk bed room, one twin room and one double room separated from the living room by a very large bookcase.

Attractions Villefranche de Conflent: starting point of le Petit Train Jaune with links to Font Romeu (highest railway in France ?), a walled village protected by the high Fort Liberia.
Mount Canigou and the Abbaye de St Martin. Both immpressive and offering walks from short to extensive.
Horse activities (in Vernet), fishing, speleology, Canyoning, a local Zoo, Wine Tours, Arboretum walks, a Casino, a Thermal Spa with treatments, Mountain races... |
