Gaillefontaine
The closest village, only a mile and a half away. Close enough for a pleasant walk along a flat, fairly quiet road. Gaillefontaine has a petrol station, tabac, restaurant, butcher, bakers, florist, general store (selling booze) and even a hairdresser. The village is overlooked by the magnificent chateau which is unfortunately not open to the public. A footpath from the market square takes you on a lovely forest walk above the town and around the back of the Chateau.
Forges Les Eaux
A delightful spa town, only a 5 minute drive away. Forges has all the shops you would expect, butcher, baker, etc, several bars, cafés and restaurants, banks and supermarkets.
Forges also has a casino (open every night until 5am), and a wonderful public swimming pool under a retractable dome with sunbathing gardens. The town also boasts a Club Med with health spa. Daily memberships are available which allow access to the gym, pool, sauna and various thalassotherapy seaweed treatments. There are also woodlands and parks around the lake with pleasant walks.
Neufchatel en Bray
The capital of the Pays de Bray region A typical market town of cobbled streets and pavement cafés and only 15 minutes to the north. Home of the famous heart shaped brie like cheese.
Dieppe
This pretty seaside resort, just 45 minutes to the north, has a picturesque marina and delightful shopping area. All along the coast line are lovely rocky coves and beautiful sandcastle beaches.
Rouen
The ancient city of Rouen is 45 minutes to the west. The medieval architecture is joined by cobbled streets and focuses on the old market place where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake. Visit the museum that is dedicated to her life. When you tire of the architectural and historical splendour then open your wallets and purses as Rouen has plenty of little antique shops, excellent boutiques and pedestrianised shopping areas. The weekend markets are well worth a visit.
Paris
Needs no introduction – suffice to say it is less than 2 hours away and therefore ideal for a day or overnight trip. Why not combine your stay at Les Noyers with a two center holiday taking in Disneyland.
Elsewhere
Other great days out would include Honfleur, Bayeux, the Normandy Landing beaches and 1st world war battlefields, particularly around the River Somme.
Golf
One of the prettiest courses in Normandy is just over ½ an hour away. The magnificent 19th century clubhouse dominates Saint Saens course with its winding fairways, water and holes literally cut out of the forest.
There are also other courses, slightly further away in Jumieges, Rouen, Etretat and Champ de Bataille.
Swimming
There is an excellent heated indoor pool at Forges Les Eaux. It has a retractable roof and sides that pull back in the summer to allow access to the surrounding lawns. At Dieppe there is an outdoor lido complex with slides and a variety of diving boards. There are also pools at Gournay and Neufchatel, untried by us, both only 20 minutes away.
Club Med
Club Med, situated in Forges Les Eaux, offers daily membership for use of the gym, pool, sauna and various thalassotherapy seaweed treatments.
Theme parks
Disneyland near Paris clearly needs no introduction and is less than two hours away. Parc Asterix is also an excellent day out for the whole family and, just 25 miles North of Paris is also less than two hours away.
Closer to home is the family fun park at Bocasse. This is only 30 mins away and has enough rides, thrills and spills to keep the whole family happy for a day. Tell the kids to take their swimming trunks. Only 5 minutes away from Le Bocasse is the Chateau de Cleres with exotic birds and animals roaming the grounds.
Cycling
Those that have been to Normandy before will know that virtually all roads are very traffic free and ideal for cycling. Of particular interest is the D133 going SE from Les Noyers towards Songeons. This route is quite flat and noted on the local maps as a road of scenic beauty.
For cyclists of all ages and abilities is the newly opened Avenue Verte; a dedicated cycle way that runs along the old railway track from Forges Les Eaux all the way to Dieppe.
Monets Gardens
Claude Monet’s famous gardens are at Giverny, only an hour’s drive to the south.
Horse Racing
A new international race track is currently being built, just out side of Forges. It is expected to open in 2004; watch this space.
Châteaux
Châteaux are in abundance in this region. Two of our favorites are Château de Martainville (full of Normandy traditions and Furniture) and Château de Vascoeuil (housing contemporary art). Both less than 30 minutes drive.
Tennis and fishing are also available at Forges Les Eaux and all surrounding towns.
